Well, who needs Bloglines when you know Mike Keen?  At tonight’s initial gathering of the group tentatively named “Sustainable Michiana”, about 20 people from as far away as Dowagiac and Elkhart gathered to discuss issues related to sustainability. I brought up my interest in hydroelectric power on the East Race of the St Joe River, especially in the design by Lawson-Fisher that included the below water-level viewing chamber.  Two other individuals were also keenly interested in hydroelectric power on the St Joe and had done some research on it in a couple of other locations (Niles and northeast Indiana).  Mike Keen suggested ideas for resources that may have the funds to make the project in South Bend a reality by framing it as an educational/children’s museum tourist destination.

WVPE is also going to be initiating sustainability in their business practices and programming and will be tapping Sustainable Michiana for subject matter.   Hopefully, I’ll be able to do a radio piece on the hydroelectric generator and “Sagwa-Se-Pe” viewing chamber.
